They don’t make cartoons like the Mysterious Cities of Gold any more. I got the box set of the original series a year or so ago (~2014) and we’ve recently gotten around to watching it. It’s stood the test of time surprisingly well – and the documentaries at the end are actually interesting now (where they were boring when I was watching it – aged 5).
Naturally I got right back into it all… and we now sing along with the theme song. It took us a while to learn all the words – so I’ve posted the Mysterious Cities of Gold lyrics below so that I have them as a permanent reminder of the wonder that is the Mysterious Cities of Gold.
For my birthday my wife got me the box set of series 2 – which was released in 2013, nearly 30 years after series 1. We haven’t started watching them yet but I am curious to see if the newer series manages to capture the magic of the originals – based on the cover art, I suspect not, but I live in hope.
The Lyrics
Children of the Sun, see your time has just begun, Searching for your way through Adventures every day.
Every day and night with the condor in flight With all your friends in tow we search for the Cities of Gold
CHORUS: (Ahhhh-ah-ah-ah) Wishing for the Cities of Gold (Ahhh-ah-ah-ah) Someday we will find the Cities of Gold!
(Doo doo doo do doo – Ahh-ah-ah – Doo doo doo do doo) Cities of Gold
Children of the Sun, someday soon you’re gonna find That your destiny holds the secret, holds the key
CHORUS (Doo doo doo do doo – Ahh-ah-ah – Doo doo doo do doo) Cities of Gold
(Doo doo doo do doo) Cities of Gold (Ahhh-ah-ah-ah) Someday we will find the Cities of Gold![/block]
And – just for my wife since she kept trying to do the voice over – here’s the intro text monologue as well 🙂
It is the 16th century. From all over Europe great ships sail west to conquer the new world, the Americas. These men eager to seek their fortune, to find new adventures in new lands. They long to cross uncharted seas and discover unknown countries. To find secret gold on a mountain trail high in the Andes. They dream of following the path of the setting sun that leads to Eldorado, and the Mysterious Cities Of Gold.
Totally unrelated but we also sing along to the Big Bang Theory as well, so here’s the Big Bang Theory lyrics:
Our whole universe was in a hot dense state, Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started. Wait… The Earth began to cool, The autotrophs began to drool, Neanderthals developed tools, We built a wall (we built the pyramids), Math, science, history, unraveling the mystery, That all started with the big bang (bang)!
Did you know that this is just the first part of the Big Bang Theory song? The lyrics for the show are shorter than the full version of the Bare Naked Ladies song, which goes like this:
Our whole universe was in a hot dense state, Then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started. Wait… The Earth began to cool, The autotrophs began to drool, Neanderthals developed tools, We built a wall (we built the pyramids), Math, science, history, unraveling the mystery, That all started with the big bang! (Bang!)
“Since the dawn of man” is really not that long, As every galaxy was formed in less time than it takes to sing this song. A fraction of a second and the elements were made. The bipeds stood up straight, The dinosaurs all met their fate, They tried to leap but they were late And they all died (they froze their asses off) The oceans and Pangea See ya wouldn’t wanna be ya Set in motion by the same big bang!
It all started with the big BANG!
It’s expanding ever outward but one day It will pause and start to go the other way, Collapsing ever inward, we won’t be here, it wont be heard Our best and brightest figure that it’ll make an even bigger bang!
Australopithecus would really have been sick of us Debating out while here they’re catching deer (we’re catching viruses) Religion or astronomy, Descartes or Deuteronomy It all started with the big bang!
Music and mythology, Einstein and astrology It all started with the big bang! It all started with the big bang!
Was it good/ useful/ a load of old rubbish? Let me know on Mastodon, or BlueSky (or Twitter X if you must).
